“What Jesus did in Cana… was the first of the signs through which he revealed His glory…” – John 2:11 (NIV)
I remember the uncertain nights of hunger and lack, when I did not know if dinner was to be expected or not. I remember the days when my only expected meal for the day came from the generosity of the family next door. During those days, my life was ordinary and straightforward, like water. Research shows that over 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water, so it is safe to say that water is somewhat common. Yet water is very valuable and necessary for life and growth.
Like water, I saw that my life was common, simple, and ordinary. What is the significance of one single drop, especially if that drop (me) didn’t have food to eat or sufficient clothes to wear?
I remember waking up to the feeling of a rat biting at my finger, I remember the scent of the yard, the visuals of hopelessness, I remember the feelings of depression, and the thoughts of suicide. Yes, I remember being like a simple jar of water serving no central purpose at a wedding reception. However, although certain waterways are not suitable for drinking, they can still be used for washing or cleaning, and most importantly, some of life can always be found in a body of water. No one is ever without a purpose.
Now, please stay with me. Let me tell you what else I remember. I remember my encounter with Jesus, now twenty years ago. I remember the instant sense of transformation (although I could not describe it). I also remember the gradual change of my habits and character over time. Friends, if my life reflected the simplicity of water before I met Christ, then it now represents new wine!
At the wedding reception in John 2:1-11, Jesus performed what is known as His first recorded miracle, as He turned water into wine. Note, however, the comment in verses 9 and 10. Jesus’ miracle didn’t just produce wine but a superior quality wine!
My life has been transformed just like the water into wine, from insignificant to significant. I went from living in a shack to owning my home. I went from never believing my life would work out, to being married with two children, from embracing thoughts of death by suicide to preaching the Gospel of light and life, from poverty to blessing others. At one point, I did not believe I would live past thirty years; now I am approaching forty, God is good, and transformational. Do not give up!
Your life may seem simple, your circumstances may seem impossible to change, but just like He did with my life and just like He did with simple water, God can turn your ordinary life into something extraordinary.
Jeremiah 1:5 stands out. God created you with a plan and purpose. Even if you are water, remember that water brings life!
